The "Saint Dumitru" Church in Orhei is an Orthodox Christian church located in the city of Orhei (Orhei district), Republic of Moldova. Founded by Vasile Lupu, the church was built between 1632 and 1636 and consecrated on the occasion of the ruler's arrival in Orhei in 1637.
The church is part of the National Architectural Heritage, being one of the most important ecclesiastical buildings in the country preserved to this day
The church was founded in 1637 by Vasile Lupu, the ruler of Wallachia between 1634–1653. As a testimony, there is a plaque with the coat of arms of Moldova in the center, installed above the entrance to the church, with the following text:
"With the will of the Father and with the help of the Son and with the accomplishment of the Holy Spirit, this place was founded, in the name of the most glorious God - the miracle worker - Ion Vasile Voievod by the mercy of God, lord of the Country of Moldavia and his Lady Theodosia and the children of the voivode".
A beautiful legend that the old people of Orhei still remember tells us about the beautiful days spent by Prince Vasile Lupu together with his son Ioan on the banks of the Ivanos river. Ioan being very sickly, he often spent time on the banks of the Ivanos, the air and murmur of the clear alley brought benefits to his health. For these reasons, Vasile Lupu built the church of St. Dumitru for the mercy of God and the health of his son
The exterior has been modified over the years, with the addition of a two-tiered bell tower.
The church is of the old mixed Moldavian type. The narthex is rectangular and elongated, the entrance to it is preceded by a closed porch, located not in the continuation of the narthex, but on one side, despite tradition. The bell tower is located above the narthex. The portal is decorated with a stone border in the Gothic style. The windows are also decorated with some Gothic elements. The domes of the nave and narthex are probably the only authentic stone domes in Moldavian churches that have not been affected by the passage of time.
In the churchyard there was a monument to the founder Vasile Lupu. A few years ago it was moved to the city center, near the town hall. The monument is cast in bronze and is the work of sculptor Oscar Han.
In 1939, the church underwent restoration work, an event recorded on a marble plaque placed at the entrance. At the same time, the painter Petru Remus Troteanu restored the murals inside, one of which represents Vasile Lupu holding the model of the church in his hands. Since then, the painting has been visibly affected by candle smoke, but the mural has been well preserved. The bells are riddled with bullet holes, vestiges of World War II.
On October 21, 2016, with the appointment of Archimandrite Siluan (Salari) in the church hierarchy as bishop of Orhei and vicar of the Metropolitanate of Chisinau and all of Moldova, the Church "Saint Dumitru" obtained the status of a cathedral.
