It is an architectural monument of national importance included in the Register of State-Protected Monuments of the Republic of Moldova. It dates from 1840-1842. Feast day: August 28 – Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
According to documentary sources, at the beginning of the 19th century, two churches were attested in the Sorocai market. The first church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was located near the fortress, was made of wood and was seriously affected by the earthquakes of 1792 and 1793. The military governor of Bessarabia, P.I. Feodorov, reported in 1838 that the “Assumption of the Virgin Mary” church in Soroca was damaged by the earthquake and stood deserted, and the stone wall around it was demolished to the foundation.
The second church, dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, was most likely built at the beginning of the 17th century, also made of wood. From a report from 1830 we learn that the church was in a disastrous state, the vaults and walls were cracked, and the decision was made to dismantle the building to the foundations.
In 1831, the Archbishop of Chisinau and Hotin, Dimitrie, blessed the construction of a new stone church, and in 1832 he approved the plan and facade. Its plan was developed by the provincial architect Rositski. In 1839, the unauthorized architect Anton Veisman developed another plan for the construction of the church. The place for construction was chosen a little further from the former church dedicated to the Archangels. The holy place was built with donations from Constantin Cherchez, at that time the owner of the estate and the Soroca market, and with help from the governor of Bessarabia. The construction works took place between 1841-1843, under the supervision of the archpriest of Soroca, Father Grigore Petriţki, who also became the parish priest of the cathedral.
The cathedral was built in the neoclassical style, in a cruciform plan, being crowned by a hemispherical dome raised on a wide drum, decorated with twin pilasters of the Ionic order, without a bell tower. Pediments in the form of an arch decorate all the facades. In 1878, a three-tiered bell tower was added in front of the entrance.
The cathedral today looks the same as it did in 1842. Even though several repairs have been made, Christian tradition has been taken into account, even the green roof is exactly the same as it was 175 years ago.
In 1862, after the passing of Father Grigore Petritski, parish priest of the cathedral in Soroca and archpriest of Soroca county, Father Teodor Pahovskii was appointed. Through his efforts, in 1878 the bell tower was built, which was attached to the cathedral building.
In a 1926 information about the cathedral it is said that the building is made of stone, covered with iron, it is solid, surrounded on three sides by a stone fence. The facade had an iron grille on a stone foundation, with a gate and three iron gates, and the fence at the facade was built in 1919-1920 from the funds of the church, the zemstva and the city. During the interwar period, the Sobor in the city of Soroca, as it was then called, was visited several times by the local archbishop, Bishop of Hotin Visarion Puiu.
With the establishment of the Soviet regime, a long period of persecution of the church in the Moldavian SSR began. Even though the priests and believers resisted, in 1972, the "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" church in Soroca was closed. Soon, the authorities began to arrange a planetarium inside it, but later they gave up on this idea, transforming the holy place into a warehouse.
The reopening took place in 1991. The first important event was the consecration of the church, through a bishop's service on November 21, 1991. In 1999, the church was repaired externally, and the consecration service was officiated by His Eminence VLADIMIR, Metropolitan of Chisinau and All Moldova, together with a council of priests.
A new chapter in the life of the "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" church in the city of Soroca began when the Vicariate of Soroca was established within the Soroca district, and on March 8, 2015, Archimandrite IOAN (Moșneguțu) was ordained to the rank of bishop of Soroca, vicar of the Metropolitanate of Chisinau and All Moldova. Thus, the church becomes an episcopal cathedral. On the morning of April 14, 2015, with the blessing of His Eminence VLADIMIR, Metropolitan of Chisinau and All Moldova, His Eminence IOAN, Bishop of Soroca, performed the first episcopal service in the Episcopal Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the municipality of Soroca.
With the efforts and care of His Eminence IOAN, Bishop of Soroca, starting with 2015, the Episcopal Cathedral in the municipality of Soroca entered a major restoration process. The floor inside was changed, a new mural was laid, a new iconostasis was installed, etc.
